You’re A…

Clueless Cutie

When it comes to style you are a bit like the pre-transformation Tai from Clueless (Brittany Murphy)

You’re passionate and caring, with an accomplishment list a mile long. Like many people, you have a love hate relationship with the fashion industry. You like the idea of looking your best but feel so overwhelmed that you don’t know where to start.

It’s not your fault that your Master’s program didn’t include personal style. Don’t stress, I’ve got a few easy tips just for you. Read on below to get started.

Dress shabbily and they remember the dress; dress impeccably and they remember the woman.
— Coco Chanel

Improving your overall look doesn’t have to be scary even if you have absolutely no idea how to choose clothes that look and feel good

Just like the great Coco Chanel told us, when you dress less than your personal best people will unfortunately remember just that! Ever wonder why the most popular segments on celebrity award shows are the worst dressed?

That first impression is a lasting one, for better or worse. As humans we have a highly developed sense of being able to categorize people and things in a split second. This used to be helpful in avoiding being eaten by big animals, now it comes across more as judgement.

Let’s see how we can get started.

1. Work from the inside out

Do you start a novel from the beginning or the middle? I would guess most people start at page one if they haven’t read the book before.

So the beginning of your style journey, Clueless Cutie is to get a good handle on your shapewear. Now when I talk about shapewear, I don’t just mean Spanx or control top pantyhose, I mean it as a general term for anything that goes under your clothing.

So this means your everyday bras to date night panties to strapless bustiers you might need with a formal gown and everything in between.

I want you to take a good hard look at what you own now. Try everything on and get rid of anything that:

  1. Doesn’t fit

  2. You don’t like [for whatever reason]

Once you have done that task, make an appointment to get a professional bra fitting! No matter if you are small or large chested, a professional fitting will make your clothes on top of your bra look at least 10x better!

2. Start with the basics - How to create a capsule wardrobe and emphasize quality over quantity

Whether you're a shopaholic with a jam packed closet or your drawers are empty, it's high-time to get your bodacious basics sorted out. Once you have a basic wardrobe that fits and looks great you can expand.

If you yearn to be a minimalist you may have heard the term “capsule wardrobe.” The basic idea is that you can pare down your wardrobe into a smaller number of pieces if they all work together.

Now this may sound boring, but stay with me. I want you to get a great fit with a few pieces of clothing that all work together. Because that gives you options. And time back not searching for something that might work.

Think about your current lifestyle. Where do you work? What type of clothing do you need to wear? What do you do for fun? Do you need special clothing for that? Go ahead and jot down some notes.

  • Pencil skirt

  • Little black dress

  • Skinny jeans

  • Jacket

Next, think about the clothing you need for the things you do the most. What clothing do you own that works for those things?

Work systematically to figure out 7-15 basic wardrobe pieces for your life. Now of those items what fits currently? Figure out if you might be able to have it altered to fit you. *Hint it is almost always easier to make clothing smaller than bigger*

3. Learn your body shape

There are tons of schools of thought about women’s bodies and their shapes. You may have heard fruit terms (apple, pear), numbers (8), or even inanimate objects like Coke bottles.

All of these terms just add to the confusion when you’re trying to find clothes that fit your body in all the right ways. I’ve broken down a very simple method to point you in the right direction.

Although we’d all love to be hourglasses, most of us are not! The majority of women are not perfectly balanced in their measurements. And that is ok.

I want you to take a good look in mirror, especially from the side view. Do you carry your weight mostly on your top ½ or bottom ½? If you do happen to be perfectly balanced you can wear most things without a problem.

Women that are top heavy should work toward getting balance using their clothes. Think to bring attention to your lower half. You can do this with the style of clothing, color, prints and other tricks to help bring the eye down.

Just the opposite for bottom heavy women. Use the style tricks I mentioned above to bring the eye up to the top half. This will fake balance and give a more pleasing overall silhouette to your body.

Maybe you’re wondering how I know so much about curvy girl clothing that fits and feels good?

Let me introduce myself…
